A Powerful Lesson in Self-leadership From Top Executives

A Powerful Lesson in Self-leadership From Top Executives

Today, I want to share two unforgettable anecdotes on self-leadership. Not to mention, the bouquet story surely left a dent (perhaps in you, too).

Recently, I hosted an event with five senior executives from big companies as panelists.

And this question was asked:

How much time do executives devote to personal growth?

Each panelist has a unique take on it. But on average, they devote at least 30% of their time to self-development.

And that time could be spent reading books every morning, meeting with their executive coaches, dedicating half a day per week to reflection and journaling, or listening to podcasts/watching online courses on the plane while traveling.

The bottom line is that they “make time” for it.

As leaders, self-development is not an afterthought or a task crammed into your already packed schedule; it is naturally part of the job.

And it all makes sense with the next story I’m sharing with you.

During a training session with a world-class business coach, she shared what she learned from the CEO of one of the largest insurance companies in the world.

When this coach walked into the CEO's office, something caught her attention almost immediately.

The office was huge office with a nice view and an intricate setup. But on her desk, there was only a flower bouquet. Nothing else.

She was intrigued and asked the CEO why.

The CEO replied, "Can I coach the coach today?"

She said yes.

The CEO continued, “This bouquet reminds me that this company is paying me to reflect and think about the strategy.”

What I want you to realize here is that the more you lead, the less you do.

And by less, I mean doing tasks you can simply delegate.

Because your role as a leader is much more than to check off a list of to-dos.

Your true role is to think, to motivate, and to inspire.

To think of a strategy that your team can trust.

To motivate your people to take action and keep going.

And to inspire new leaders to step up to the role.

And I tell you, this kind of leadership is not something anyone is born with.

It is learned, nurtured, and practiced.

Self-development is a crucial part of this process.

And there’s one specific way top CEOs and executive teams approach self-development…
